Detcon1 Extends YA Award Nomination Deadline to March 7

Detroit, MI – Detcon1, the 2014 North American Science Fiction Convention, is extending the nomination deadline for the Detcon1 Awards for Young Adult and Middle Grade Speculative Fiction to March 7, 2014. The nominations period was originally scheduled to end on February 28, 2014.

Detcon1 chairperson Tammy Coxen said “People are very excited about the award, but have asked us for more time to make their nominations. With so many excellent books published in the field in 2013, we don’t want to make people rush.”

Anyone may submit a nominating ballot for the award, although only Detcon1 members are eligible to vote. Each nominating person may submit a single form with up to five nominated works that are book-length young adult or children’s science fiction or fantasy books first published in the calendar year 2013. Works published in a language other than English are also eligible if their first year of publication in English was 2013. Online and print-ready nomination forms and full instructions are available at

A short list of finalists for each category will be released by the Award Administrator, and voting will begin in early April 2014. The award winners will be announced at Detcon1 in a joint ceremony with the 2014 Golden Duck Awards. Detcon1 will be putting a special focus on YA literature at the convention. In addition to presenting the awards, Detcon1 also recently announced that Nnedi Okorafor will be attending the convention as YA Special Guest.

Funding for the Detcon1 Awards, Special Guest and related Young Adult programming was provided by Chicon 7, the 70th World Science Fiction Convention, held in Chicago, IL.
